Hacienda La Esmeralda was first purchased as a retirement venture by Rudolph Peterson in 1967, and his family have been tending to the land around the small town of Boquete ever since. In the early days, the land was primarily pasture for beef cattle, but over the years, the family transitioned to dairy cattle and coffee production.

In 2004, the Peterson family and Hacienda La Esmeralda took the coffee world by storm. That year's Best of Panama competition saw Geisha introduced to the world, where it secured the highest price ever paid for coffee at auction.  Cañas Verdes is part of the Peterson’s original estate, dating back to 1967.

Each year for the past several years, Hacienda Esmeralda has held a private auction of their prized Geisha varietal, each Esmeralda Special lot coming from a specific plot of land on their farm. Altogether there is not much coffee, only about 20,000 pounds, which must fill a big demand from all corners of the world (this may sound like a lot but is only half of one shipping container). Competition for the coffee is fierce and prices go very high.  Fortunately, for the past few years Esmeralda has released their "second coffee", the 100% Panama Esmeralda Private Reserve Geisha. As in the wine world where the second wine of the very top chateaux are fabulous wines in their own right, still costly but a relative bargain. Lafite-Rothschild has its Lafite Rothschild Carruades de Lafite; Chateau Latour its Les Forts de Latour. These wines would be great in anyone's book, but they are withheld, often for a tiny detail, from being in the rarified top lot. The same holds true for Esmeralda Private Reserve Geisha. This is a wonderful coffee, exhibiting much of the same lovely jasmine, floral and lemony tones witnessed in the auction lots but at less than a third of the price.

In years past, the Private Reserve collections were a blend from all three different farms run by Hacienda Esmeralda.  This year we have been able to secure a lot from each specific farm.  We are kicking it off this year by doing a roast of the Cañas Verdes selection.  This coffee has the beautiful citrus and floral notes we love in the best washed Geishas, it is delicate and intense at the same time.  This coffee defies both logic and expectations and is one we look forward to carrying every single year.  We have been fortunate to carry coffee from this wonderful farm and family since very early on and are happy to continue the tradition by offering these stunning coffees this year.

We ship freshly roasted coffee Monday through Friday via UPS ground. Most orders placed before 2pm EST will ship same day.

Delayed, Lost or Stolen Packages

We will do our best to help troubleshoot with you, but we
cannot control what happens when your package leaves the roasting
facility. Once the package has been picked up, it is out of our hands.

Holidays, severe weather, carrier staff shortage and high package volumes are causing delays in package transit time.

As a small business, we are unable to absorb the costs of
packages being lost in transit. We cannot refund orders that are marked
as delivered with a tracking number, even if a customer is stating they
haven’t received the package.

For UPS claims, please email us at georgio@georgioscoffee.com

When checking out, *Please make sure your address is correct!*

In order to balance getting your coffee out to
you as quickly as possible with freshness of roast we ship all coffee as
ordered within one week of the roast date. We typically roast
Wednesdays and Fridays.

In our experience most coffees
taste best after a few days rest, and high quality coffees stay at peak
flavor up to six weeks post roast.
